In India, with geographical area of 329 mha, only about 142 mha has been under certification for more than 2 decades. A variety of soils with distinct characteristics are encountered in the country. The per capita arable land decreased from 0.34 ha in 1950-51 to 0.15 ha in 200/-. Any damage to the soil resource eco-system is bound to hamper the crop productivity and overall progress of the country.
